Info on waterbalast vs. shoal keel

I am interested in a 25 ft sailboat, primarily to be sailed on a lake, but I would love to trailer it occasionally to the intra-coastal waterway for coastal sailing. I am concerned about the stability of the Catalina 250 water balast vs. a keel. I like the versatility of the water balast Any reviews or articles or posts that anyone can point me to?
