AUX POWER CATALINA 16.5

I'm looking for advice on the outboard motor power rating required for the 16.5 Catalina. It has a CATALINA motor mount affixed to the transom. The boat salesman said as little as 1.5 HP will do, while an armchair sailor I know suggested 9.9 hp. Its not unusual for the waters I frequent to expect 5 kt currents. This has never been a problem for my power boat. But this sailing will be a new experience.
