The following guide is intended mostly for fun, but may help you narrow the list of boats to consider, based on your experience, intended sailing area and conditions, and budget.

Before you can answer this question there are several others you must answer first. Circle the one response number for each of the following questions.

- What kind of water are you interested in sailing? 1) small shallow lakes, 2) fairly protected waters, 3) open water - What are the prevailing winds like? 1) Less than 10 knots, 2) 10 - 20 knots, 3) over 20 knots - What is the normal seastate? 1) 1 -2 ft, 2) 2-4 ft 3) more than 4 ft - How big is your tow vehicle? 1) 4 cylinder, 2) 6 cylinder, 3) 8 cylinder - How far will you be towing? 1) more than 500 miles, 2) 200 - 500 miles, 3) less than 200 miles - How tall are you? 1) under 5’ 9”, 2) under 6’, 3) over 6’ - How claustrophobic are you in small spaces? 1) not at all, 2) slightly uncomfortable, 3) can’t stand it - How many people will be on the boat? 1) just me, 2) two adults, 3) more than two adults - What type of sailing interests you? 1) daysailing, 2) overnighting, 3) week long cruising - How rich are you? 1) church mouse, 2) some spare money sometimes 3) not a problem

Now add up your response numbers and compare to the following: 10 -12 points: consider a cartopper (e.g sunfish, escape) 12- 15 points: 15 to 18 footer (e.g. West Wight Potter, Siren) 15 - 22 points: 19 to 22 footer (e.g. Ensenada 20, Catalina 22) 22 - 26 points: 23 to 26 footer (e.g. Hunter 240, MacGregor 26) over 26 points: consider a non-trailerable boat 30’ or better.
