If you are interested in having two sets for different wind conditions, why not buy one set 1 inch wide and 1 set 5/8 inches wide? The stiffness is proportional to the width, so the 5/8 will be 62% as stiff as the one inch wide ones.
Under what conditions would you change the battens? Am I correct in thinking you'd use the wider (and thus stiffer) battens to hold in a large camber in the sail in moderate conditions and the softer battens to flatten and depower the sail in windier conditions?
