A year ago I was in your position. I had owned a Seafarer 22 for almost 30 years. Upgrading her was more expensive than purchasing a Catalina 27 ready to go with almost new sails and almost new outboard. I spent $6K on my "new" 81' Catalina 27 and have had a ball. The Catalina 27 sails like a dream, she is quick in light air (this is the Chesapeake Bay where we are known for light summer air in the 5 knots realm) and she is stable on her feet in heavier air (15+ knots).
If I had to list shortcomings it would be sleeping accommodations. Mine is a "traditional" interior with a fold down table. It "sleeps" 5 (2 in the V-birth and 2 in port and starboard births and one in the quarter birth. Well, the v-birth would be fine for midgets and the port settee birth is short with an over hanging stove counter. The starboard settee birth is OK but the wife complains it is too narrow. I use the quarter birth and find it pleasant except for lack of air circulation.
