The C27 is a very nice sailing boat, pretty quick and very easy. Our test sail convinced us to move up. This is our fourth Catalina. The support groups, parts availability and factory support are about as good as it gets.
The shortcomings? Joe made a great start, I would also add storgae to the list. Our starboard lockers are full of tanks, so port is all there is and that is pretty small. For our needs though (daysailing and short trips), this boat is fine. We just converted over from tiller to wheel, added RF this past season, so it just keeps getting better.
Differences between the 27 and 270 are many. Price will be the first eye opener. There are thousands of C27's out there, price is pretty attractive. There are few 270's and find the prices to be quite high in comparision. The 270 is a beamier boat with that beam carried well aft, walkthough transom with swim platform, wing keel was available I believe, diesel power is standard, wheel steering is also standard. Ventilation is better with more opening hatches, although we have added $100 worth of vents and that made a big difference. The 270 is a more modern version of the 27 with the type of rigging, hull design and other things you find on newer boats.
Hope this helps.
