In Response To: I had to go back to reread your first post. (Dave R 1980 C27)

Do you have an eye splice at the end of your hallyard? Eye splices often make the last foot of a line stiffer and larger in diameter than the rest of the line, causing binding as that last foot passes over the masthead sheeves.
I got rid of several eye splices on my boat to eliminate that problem and I'm very happy with the results.
