rudder post stuffing box??? Do I need one?

The first Edson guide I had for the tiller to wheel conversion did not show installation of a stuffing box on the rudder tube. The second version of the guide did show the stuffing box. When I called the Edson tech support line, they said it was an option that was up to me. I decided not to install one.
That was last fall, the boat has not been in the water since. How about a poll of those with a tiller to wheel conversion. Do you have a stuffing box? Assuming that the snow ever stops here, I can still install one if I really need to.
