Greetings and thanks for responding. I think I did get a pretty decent deal on the engine with tranny, mounts, panel, coupling etc. It is a complete running takeout from a Cat30. What I like is the completeness of the package and that it appears (I know I shouldn't say this until the project is complete) to be a pretty easy swap. No engine bed mods needed, exhaust, which I just rebuilt two years ago is pretty similar.
I already started down the Yanmar 2GM road. I have a rebuild canidate but to rebuild and do the engine bed and exhaust mods and find the other stuff like mounts and the panel is a way bigger project than what I have in front of me today. And I'd rather spend my time sailing than mechanicing.
I removed the old engine last week. Today I hope to hoist the 5411 on to the boat and remove the fuel tank and prop shaft. Tank to clean, check and install an inspection port. Shaft to remove seized coupling and check for straightness. Luckily I have a buddy that's a free-lance machinist.
Once this project is complete I expect to have the working Petter AB1W with associated parts engine, also a Yanmar 2GM that needs to be rebuilt. Any interest?
Doing the work myself doesn't cost much money, but is does cost sailing, skiing, and whitewater play time - so I try to pick finite, doable projects. I hope this turns out to be one of those. I'm also very lucky to have a supportive and participating boat partner. She's a great sailer (I'm still learning) and she enjoys helping with the physical work of maintenance and upgrades - a lot of which would be way tougher to do without the extra brain and another set of hands.
