Rudder issue

My 1978 27' has a crack about mid width on the starboard side of the rudder, 20 inches long and about 1/16 wide. going from top toward the bottom of the rudder. I plan on using dremel to widen to about 1 inch, see if any water damage, dry out and then fill and finish. I would appreciate any suggestions about this problem.
