David--
I *am* the local cabinet/furniture maker!
My usual supplier charges about $40/bf for teak in random lengths/widths, when he can get it, which isn't often. If you know of a place where I can get 6" 4/4 S2S for $18/bf, please let me know the particulars, because I'm up for a road trip.
Teak is pretty scarce, and getting scarcer, because most of it is produced in east Asia. The best stuff comes from Burma (Myanmar) and generally isn't exported to the US. Indian teak is pretty good but seldom FSC certified. (I work in southern California, and FSC certification is big here; my customers care about the environment and want to know that they're getting wood from sustainable sources.) Some also comes from the Philippines, but the quality tends to be very variable.
I had a some guy stop by my shop trying to sell me "South American teak" which was actually an entirely different wood called ipe. Pretty stuff, but it's so heavy and hard it's a pain in the butt to work with.
