This spring we replaced thru-hulls and valves. A fellow working on his C-27 near my boat was trying to twist the valve off one of his thru-hulls and had the pipe nipple come out in his hand. It made me very happy that I decided it was time to replace them.
I did think I'd get away with using the old bronze strainer for the engine cooling water intake. I put a 1/2" ball valve on it but when the boat was put in the water for the first time this year, we discovered a leak. It turned out that the thru-hull part of the strainer was corroded through. I must have distrubed the caulk enough by changing valves to open it up. I ended up putting a new 3/4" strainer and then a 3/4" valve in. It works but it's kind of a tight squeeze.
Here are the before and after images.

We've decided to put a porta potti in the head so we won't be using this last valve. I thought about removing the entire hole but for resale purposes decided to just go ahead and replace it. At least the marine head can be installed if the next owners prefer it.
