Bilge Flood/Pump

Report: outside forum guidelines

I recently sailed my new 81' C27 from San Francisco to Santa Cruz, its new home. I had been on the waiting list for a slip to 10 years! I had a problem along the way. We had a following sea/swell. It was coming up the transom about half way, but really no problem. All of a sudden a passenger said, "There is water on the floor!" I ran down there and pulled up the carpeting and sure enough the bilge was flooded. The bilge pump was running and finally pumped it out. Suddenly it started to fill up again. After a while I realized the water was actually coming out of the bilge pump. It was getting back filled by the exhaust line going under water. The temporary fix was to pull the hose off the pump and raise it higher than the water level outside. Any ideas on a permanent fix for this problem? Thanks the group.
