Barry, I should have said that I certainly take no offense. I looked at the plate this weekend when dinghying (is that a word?) out to the boat, several times, and I rather like it. Perhaps, that's because I made it! In any event, I'm still interested in other methods.
When I bought the boat, the hull, around the motor mount area, had many small stress cracks from the outboard. I'm not sure if that is from the weight or the thrust. Maybe when the outboard is tilted up, it is just too much load for the gelcoat to bear.
I know that I could close up the opening and put the motor on a regular adjustable mount, but I like the ability to reach the motor when I'm using it.
Has anyone done something else that worked well?
Just for information, for anyone who is considering this sort of thing, I should note that the outermost, lowest 2 bolt holes of my plate are through hollow fiberglass with no core. The rest are through wood core.
