I have a datamarine knot meter on an '82 catalina 27 that has a removable sending unit.
There is a split ring that holds a locking pin in place. If you work quickly, you will only get a couple of quarts of water in the boat.
Remove the split ring or Keeper Have ready the plug with the pin hole lined up Remove the locking pin while holding down the sending unit Grab the plug with one hand and pull out the sending unit with the other Quickly shove the plug in, install the pin and keeper.
Try cleaning the sending unit first, They foul quickly with growth
