Thank you very much for posting the pics. I just got back from vacation. The mod looks great. I will assume that it is not large enough to get the engine through. What did your rebuild involve? Is there still anything on the engine which is still hard to access (carburetor)? Did you redo your exhaust?
I have read on other forums of people recessing flush aluminum access doors. The only issue seemed to be the potential for the hatch to get hot from the sun. The cost/availability of an aluminum hatch factors in also I'm sure. I will be seriously considering this add on.
