I like this idea but I've been contemplating the possibility of using the cutout from the cockpit floor as the hatch cover. I've been thinking that a frame could be put in below the floor with a gasket on it to keep the water out and some sort of edging around the cut out to make up for the kerf from the router bit used to cut it out.

I'd probably make it so the hatch would be released from below for security reasons
