Garhauer Marine (http://www.garhauermarine.com) makes a rigid vang that will fit a Catalina 27. I spoke with them at the Catalina Rendevous last year and they were very willing to answer all my questions. I've heard from others that their customer service, including technical issues, is really good. Look on their website under Rigid Boom Vangs. If you do change yours out, could you please let us know how it goes? This modification is the next on my list.
