In Response To: Winter project...replacing bulkheads (amory)

as long as you're going to the trouble of replacing the bulkheads, may i suggest that you also fabricate a matching chainplate for each of the uppers and through-bolt one to the other. this should give you a little more strength and peace of mind.

assuming that the original bulkheads were 1/2", i wouldn't imagine that 3/4" would be necessary. the thicker material will add weight and a lot of $$$ to the cost of the replacement. the more important thing is to keep the water out by being diligent about caulking and regularly checking all the through-deck fittings, screws and bolts.
