They eliminated the gaff tip lead

Because it did more harm than good. When the gaff is fully raised on a Com-Pac, it is near vertical. That lead out to the tip pretty much pulled straight down, and did little to bring the gaff close to the mast. It also added friction and needed a longer halyard (with more coils, more twists). You're better off without it, IMO.
