Before modifying the boat because it's hard to sail in 30 mph winds, maybe give it a few shots in lighter winds. By the way, in that much wind you should have been raising your reefed mainsail. If you have not removed the two guides rods on either side of the sail track, the reefed part can get jammed up in there. Even if you have removed them, using your halyards to pull up the boom with a clump of sail tied to it can be hard.
