My Cunningham: designed to tighten or loosen the clew of the sail for minor adjustments in shaping. It's an OEM green line that originates on the starboard mast with a stop knot holding it through a padeye. I have a black line that's for jiffy reefing that leads to the cockpit. I fear going to the bow in big winds while singlehanding. But then, you know how dangerous I am on a boat.
I put a downhaul through small grommeted holes I made behind the sail's bolt rope on my Potter 15. It worked beautifully and almost "flaked" the sail as it came down. There were no lazyjacks on it.
So when people on this forum talk about a downhaul, it's something they've probably added onto their set-up, right? Because getting a downhaul wasn't an option when I bought the boat.
