"but I don't understand what you are saying about pulling from different sides of the companionway."
Jim, someone suggested pulling at the throat halyard between the Spinlock and the block at the mast base. I'd go up to the mast and yank directly, but it's difficult in windy conditions and/or singlehanding. So I was referring to bracing myself while standing in the companionway (after the sail was most of the way up) and pulling the halyard toward port (only pulling in one direction). I don't think this would work for me. The best solution (if any are needed after I go through my problem-solving order) is that Triple Purchase idea.
"If you need to, you can put your feet on the cabin bulkhead (with your back facing the stern of the boat), and use your legs to help pull."
I think this is what someone else suggested and I misconstrued it to mean getting into the companionway. I'll try this if I have trouble after the SailKote, burr check, etc.
When I pull the halyard directly downward AT THE MAST, it goes right up. But I've only been able to do that once when I had other people controlling the boat's direction. It's possible the SailKote will resolve the whole problem.
Boy, I love this forum! You're even getting involved from Yellowstone! How's the ice situation?
