Bob, Everything these guys said is smack-on. Been sailing mine for 5 yrs. I leave rudder down all the time. I did make a shear pin which I keep the rudder locked down with for protection if (when) you hit something. I put a 1/8" piece of aluminum rod in my drill press and holding a hacksaw to it, cut 4 grooves in it, about 1/2 way thru. Cut it to same lgth. as solid st. stl. pin, drilled small hole thru one end, put a ring type cotter in it to fasten on same cable solid pin is on. This has'nt sheared yet, but is slightly bent. I know it will shear, because only have 1/16" diam. in center, gotta be weaker than rudder pivot. Try it. Johnny Walker,Cedar River Harbor MI (U.P.)
