Bob, use good old bowling alley wax. The stuff does not get too messy and I never have my gaff saddle, hatch cover or traveller stick while using it. I just don't touch the sail until my hands are clean following application. The guy who steps Simba's mast with a crane HATES me because I wax the entire length from forestay to the gooseneck upon launching.
