And yes, do keep the peak of the gaff high while lowering the sail. It helps to drive all the rigging down the boom. The individual ties are the way my boat is rigged also. I had thought a couple of times about trying a lacing but was worried that it would contribute to hanging things up. Seems that's your experience and I'm glad I didn't try it now
