I've always called that thing a gaff gooseneck, and I had to replace that on our Picnic Cat once. I launched at a ramp with an overhanging tree, and all I was doing was finding a spot for a depth sounder transducer. Because of the tree I launched mast-down, but then decided to step the mast to get it out of my way.
It was all very unorthodox, since I wasn't sailing, and I just got out of my normal rhythm. Seems like I dropped the mast once successfully, then decided to get it up out of my way again, and then when I dropped it the second time the long pin wasn't in place. No mast damage, but it bent the vertical piece the halyard shackles to.
When I straightened it I had the impression its strength was reduced. I kept it as a spare and bought a new one from Com-pac. I think it was about $30, but I could be wrong.
