Ed, what you are describing can be even tougher when you reef. It sounds like you have discovered the effect of the wind on that beamy catboat hull...tacking down wind, it helps you thru the turn...but turning into the wind can be a bear sometimes. The wind will prevent the hull from coming about and you are locked in irons. I find keeping some speed up going into the turn and not hesitating at all as she goes thru the turn helps. With two reefs in on a 25 knot day I have, at times found it almost impossible to tack coming up into the wind....she just dies in irons until you either skull her around with the rudder (not great with an old rudder) or turn on the iron maiden so you can get home safely.
