As I understand it, you were headed west with the wind coming over your aft port quarter. You were on a broad reach and should have been on port tack. Then you turned to port to come about. I would guess you had turned about 135 degrees when your bow pointed into the wind. Turning kills your speed and you were asking a catboat to do a lot. Under those conditions, I would have jibed to starboard and after passing through approx 135 degrees of turn, started to trim for a close reach on a starboard tack.
