In additions to other suggestions, I find that you need to harden up to the fastest tack you can make as close to the wind as you can before attempting going about or she will stall. Also, be sure the board is down all the way, as she will not make it if the board is up much at all. Lastly, I have to hestitate changing sides myself until the sail starts to fill on the new tack, or the slight list can stall our 14-foot Picnic Cat. When going about, I move to the center of the boat as we start to luff into the tack.
And sometimes, it takes a couple of tries, not matter what!
Usually pushing the boom to the side you want to become the new windward and holding it there will move the bow out of the wind's eye.
Jibing is an option, and I am more comfortable jibing a small cat than a sloop.
