raising the throat halyard all the way. Just after you've got the mast secured, lift the boom & folded sail up above the hinge; take the long linch pin and place it through the hinge holes BELOW the boom. This lifts my boom high enough to clear the boom gallows on all points of sail.
Like you, I'm always concerned about an accidental downwind gybe. I always try to position the boat with just-off-downwind full broad reach, but sometimes you just can't do that. So when going downwind, I'm cautious about which side the sail is on. For me, even a matter of inches makes me feel safer from an accidental gybe. Oh, and I should mention: I've committed at least 10 accidentals at this point since getting the boat in 2006. HTH.
