On removing the trim

That thin piece is really not too bad to remove, but if you break it, it will break at one of the screw holes. The diagonal joints are strong, probably stronger than the rest of the piece (see Carl's thread on failure). I broke one of these in two places, both at a screw hole. Cut it free. If you try to pull it free, you will break it.
