CanSail tiller tamer with the motor running at low speed... boat pointed into the wind, of course. What often happens to me is that the wind shifts and the sail fills BEFORE I've finished raising it. A despicable situation. I lower the sail and try again. We've had extremely strong and fickle winds for most of the summer. Very strange for this area. I'm going to try that suggestion of tying the boom to the tiller.
Most of the time, I'm a singlehander. I don't find it all that easy but finding a sailing partner is even harder, so I still venture out by myself. Truly, it is so much easier with a second pair of hands. For example, just leaving the dock can be tricky by oneself. I release the two bow dock lines. Before I can rush to the stern, the wind has already moved the boat into an awkward position (last time it cozied up to the boat in the next slip... 45-degree angle to the dock! Then it's tricky steering straight backwards between the two remaining stern pilings. I ALWAYS experience a case of nerves at this point. But I still manage to get out in one piece. And now, with my electric motor, I get back in rather smoothly. No more crises.
