School for Scandal

In Response To: Scandalizing is OK (Tom Ray)

I always scandalize when I reef. I start the iron jenny, head into the wind, lock the tiller, scandalize, reef, unscandalize/descandalize (?), and sail away. Total time, about two to three minutes.

By scandalizing and heading into the wind, the gaff trails straight back and it is much easier to reef as the gooseneck does not bind in the sail track. As I use lazy jacks, I don't think the sail is stretched in the maneuver.
