Greg, I spent 12 years as an FE on C-5s. After the Saigon crash, and then the Souix City crash, at least two hours every year would be spent in the sim covering loss of all tail control. We even tried the Alaskan Airlines scenario since the tail is designed the same, just a lot bigger.
The C-5 would show next to no response moving a 5K# object from the front to the back of the cargo box. That works out to be close to 50ft in front of the CG to 60ft behind it.
About the only technique that was found effective was throttle control. The elevator would "flap" in the airstream, and induce a fugoid oscillation that would get worse until the airplane went inverted, like the Alaskan Air flight. To counter it, we would add throttle as the nose started to drop, and chop the throttles just before the top.
With all of the practice we did, I still "died" serveral times in my carreer. Oh yeah, to my knowledge no one ever survived the Alaskan Air scenario.
The Souix City plane actual hit with one wing low, and that was what caused it to cartwheel. They still did an outstanding job of getting it on the ground.
