I think the way it should be is the gooseneck, which currently has the sail attached to it should go through the eye in the mast end of the boom and that slips into the groove in the mast. There should either be a turning block or an eye in the boom where the sail is attached now to allow you to remove the sail while underway without tools. I can't tell if it is like mine but my sail foot has a groove for a bolt rope and an eye for a shackle in that area. Hope that helps.
