Antenna Trouble

I am installing a West Marine VHF 550 into my CM26. The antenna (shakespeare 5241-R) came with the boat and I have not used it yet. The resistence reading I get between the center male coax connector and the threaded portion of the coax connector is less than 10 ohms (more like 0 ohms). Is anyone familiar with this antenna? Is the coax easily removable from the antenna element to test the cable or antenna by itself?
