For what it's worth, when I'm done sailing I usually unhook the mainsheet from the traveller and snap it onto the lifeline that runs along the side of the cockpit. That swings the boom well out of the way, but forces you to go the other side if you need to go forward. Hiking everything higher probably has a better result, but I'm happy with this arrangement.
