when the earth was flat. In fact IIRC, it's illegal in class racing like the C-22's. But then those are the guys that will use piano wire for a keel cable to cut drag. Seems to me I remember that someone used that heavy vinyl that's used where you separate walk in coolers from the outside to keep the cold in. They attached it to the hull along each side the keel trunk so that it would flip across the keel trunk opening when the keel was down but still allow the keel to be retracted into the trunk. I thought a person could extend the keel trunk all the way aft and open at the back. I suppose that would weaken the hull, basically cutting it in half. You could strenghthen it back, but is extra weight.
