Thanks for picking up on the lost factor. The barrel of the turnbuckle is 4 1/2 inches, it's a closed body with a toggle on one end and an aircraft fork on the other end. From your explanation, I'm going to connect the headstay to the mast, raise the mast, be sure the turnbuckle is backed out so that about 1/2 inch is left, and then measure the distance to the first hole. Then I simply lower the mast, stretch the headstay and measure adding on the additional inches needed. Since I also think my lowers are also a few inches too short, I can use the same principal when I measure for my headstay.
Also the aft is longer than the headstay.
