I look forward hearing what you find out back there. Actually, it was November 1, 1972 when the rule went into effect requiring that boats manufactured in the U.S. be equipped with a Hull Identification Number, very much like cars have a VIN. In theory anyway, such a system should make recovering stolen boats easier. There is more about HINs in the link below.
That's it. No other standards apply other than the number.
