Pete,
I agree halfway with South Dakota being "western." The Missouri cuts the State about in half. The West is Ranch land. The temperment and everything else is Western. The east is Corn farm land. In most ways it is closer to Iowa and Minnesota. I live in east South Dakota considered by most to be "upper midwest." Now watch, the Minnesotans will weigh-in and not want to claim any similarity at all to South Dakota.
