Thanks for the affirmation, Henry. My learning experience involved letting a crewman attach the forestay to the line I use to let the mast back down. Since the forestay uses a standard clevis and pin, for this to work properly, the pin needs to be fully in the clevis, preferably with the keeper (cotter pin or wire loop) in place.
The mast was about 2/3 down when the clevis let go and the mast crashed the rest of the way down. Nobody was directly under it, but several people needed to clean their shorts after that happened. The crewman subsequently insisted that he was SURE he had properly installed the pin and the keeper. Yeah, right...
