Five years ago I bought a 1972 Clipper Mariner MK-26; I had to buy a trailer to transport it. The boat was completely incrusted below the waterline with about one inch of barnacles. I took a flat shovel to the hull to scrape the heaviest stuff off first and after the hull had a chance to dry, spent the next 6 weeks electrically sanding the remaining barnacles and bottom paint off the hull. Of course this exposed several blisters which I have since patched. I also removed the Iron core swing keel and rebuilt it, and cleaned out the barnacles in the Swing-keel well. The Original cable was long rusted away and a new winch and cable have to be installed.
I am looking for some advice for applying a new Gel-Coat over the bottom of the hull and the keel, since I would like to get this investment back in the water before next summer.
There is a place on the transom for a outboard motor, and the vessel was fitted at one time with an inboard auxiliary motor and wheel helm, both of which I am glad to say were removed and patched before I bought the craft. I have never sailed a boat that had a motor worth its weight or that ever worked in a pinch. So, I have learned to sail with out the hindrance of such mechanics.
