Hi Cope,
Good luck putting the puzzle pieces together. I can't tell you what year your boat was built, but my educated guess is that there is about a 95% chance it was built in 1971.
That guess is based on the following evidence, some of which is very "squishy." MOST early CM21 boats claim to be built in 1971 up until about hull number 499, and the latest owner to claim 1971 is hull number 627 (VERY unlikely). The requirement to apply a federally-mandated HIN was not in place until November, 1972 (which does not mean you had to wait until then to use them). The first CM21 with a federal HIN that I see in my database was hull number 892, built in October, 1972 (as always, with the disclaimer that I can't be certain the numbers I have been provided are accurate). Production of the CM21 was at a trickle at that time, presumably because the factory was then cranking out the relatively new CM26 as fast as they could build them.
CM21 #109 claims to be a 1973, which is obviously wrong. Tom here says he is sure that 179 is a 1972, but I don't know what he bases that on. #208, last reported in Rhode Island claims 1972, with no evidence. But, as I said, every other boat that claims a year up to hull 499 claims 1971.
For whatever it's worth...
