All the boats that remained in the marina were there because we needed to be for some reason. For most people cruising, our boat is our home. Where do you go when you leave your home?
Almost every one who got off the boats in the hours up to the actual arrival of the hurricane went up to the marina office. Some went to a couple of other places, but stayed close to the marina. We were not on Guenevere during the bad winds.
Insurance….
For one thing, Insurance only replaces material things. When cruising, your boat becomes a family member! She takes care of you, and you take care of her. And Guenevere is full of all the small mementos collected over the last 2 years.
For another thing, we priced insurance and for the premium we were quoted for the two of us to cruise outside of the USA, we could replace the boat every 5 years. AND, none of them would insure us for a Pacific crossing at all. We still have our home and property in the U.S., so decided to self-insure.
Every one handles their boat and the situation they are in, in there own way. Ain’t that the GREAT thing about being the captain of you own ship?
