Wayne,
I have not used an Icom 718, so can’t say. The 706 is excellent for small boats. We have the control head at the nav station, and the body is inside a cabinet. So far, the inside of our boat has been very dry. So I have not had to do anything out of the ordinary to protect it. We are VERY happy with our 706!
My thoughts are that if you have ANY size boat, I would use one or more Waeco or Engel units! I would build a shelf that they could be fastened to and go that way. Then, WHEN (not if) they fail, just toss them overboard. As I said in my report, we are using a Norcold unit. They were the only portable units I could get at the time we were outfitting. I think if you check, they all use about 4 Amps.
Using the boats engine to generate electrical power (and not moving at the same time) is a BAD idea. So the question on solar panels is how long do you like to anchor at one spot? If a place is very good, we may sometimes stay for weeks…
For us, 2 group 27 batteries would not work.
