bill-

this may be too late on the info for you but i have the yachtboy 400. got it on ebay (new in box) -- i was able to pick up the SSB nets in the SOC with it pretty good. i used it in san carlos, then crossed to baja and used it in bahia concepcion and at mulege. no reception problems. it came with an external antenna that you can run up a halyard but i got just as good reception by touching the the little fixed antenna to a backstay or shroud. it also got reception with the fixed antenna alone (but not quite as good).

two or three years ago when i got it on ebay, you could always find about 5 or 6 of them currently for sale or up for bid (but i didn't see any steals on them - most went for around $90 - $100 with shipping.)
