Rental Car at Los Cabos

I asked this before and got no response. I am about to fly down to do some work on my boat. I want to get a rental at the airport to drive to La Paz. I did that last year already and they scared me into taking extra insurance that cost nearly as much as the car rental itself. What is the story on that?. Anyone knows?
