Self Steering

I don't want to spend several thousand dollars on a Monitor, Sailomat, or other commercial wind vane. I could probably make one if I had some plans. Anyone know of a source for such plans? Also, has anyone tried a setup whereby surgical tubing is rigged up from the end of the boom through some blocks to the tiller? Sort of a "poor man's" self steering unit. I've read about some but can't locate the setup drawings or articles now. Any suggestions, ideas, sources would be appreciated. Thanks Dana
